A 50-year-old forest guard was today brutally killed while he was preventing encroachment on forest land in Navi Mumbai, officials said.
B N Jadhav, the guard from Rabale under Thane range, was attacked by a man, identified only as Gupta, with a sharp weapon this afternoon. Jadhav, who was hit on the head, collapsed and died, District Forest Officer Kishore Thackeray said.
Jadhav was on duty when he spotted Gupta encroaching on forest land at Mumbradevi hills at Rabale MIDC. A heated argument ensued which ended in the fatal assault, he said.
Rabale police have registered an offence of murder against Gupta and launched a manhunt for him.
