Former AG office accountant gets three yrs RI for cheating

The CBI had registered a case on June 30, 1992 and filed a charge sheet on April 28, 1994 under different sections of IPC and Prevention of Corruption Act against Jaharlal Das, a former senior accountant in the office of the Accountant General, and Dhiresh Kumar Chakraborty, the then director-cum-chairman of Tricon Wood Products (P) Ltd of Thana Road here.

"Jaharlal Das was sentenced to undergo three years simple imprisonment with a total fine of Rs one lakh and Dhiresh Kumar Chakraborty to three years simple imprisonment with fine of Rs 50,000," a CBI statement said today.

"It was alleged that undue favour was shown to the directors of M/s Tricon Wood Products Ltd by bank officers of erstwhile New Bank of India (now Punjab National Bank) in sanctioning of loans and advances on the basis of false or forged documents in violation of the laid down banking norms and procedures.

"The loans and advances amount to the extent of Rs 30.90 lakh (approx) was allegedly misappropriated. The role of Jaharlal Das had also emerged during the investigation, for favouring the accused," it said.
