Despite opposition from the Leader of Opposition, former West Bengal police chief Naparajit Mukherjee was today recommended for the appointment as a member of the state's Human Rights Commission.
The recommendation for Mukherjee, who retired as DGP last month, as a member of the commission was for a period of five years, Assembly Speaker Biman Banerjee said here after a meeting.
The appointment is recommended by a committee comprising the Speaker, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Leader of the Opposition CPI(M)'s Surjya Kanta Mishra, who objected to the appointment.
Mishra said that a number of cases were pending in the Commission against Mukherjee when he was the DG and hence he cannot be the member of the commission.
"It is not fair that a person against whom charges have been made, will sit in judgement," he said.
