A 40-year-old man was arrested for allegedly murdering and robbing a senior citizen in Central Delhi's Jama Masjid area, police said today.
The incident had taken place on Sunday, when Veer Singh Jain (72), a cloth businessman was allegedly robbed of Rs six lakh and then murdered inside his ancestral home in central Delhi's Chippiwada area here by the accused Rajbir, his former driver and an associate.
The accused was identified by the deceased's daughter Anshu who had reached the spot after she was called by Jain to discuss some family matters. As they saw Anshu, they pushed her on the floor, picked up the bag containing Rs six lakh and fled.
Several police teams were formed to crack the case and movement of Rajbir was followed. It was revealed that Rajbir took shelter in his brother's house at Mandawali, Delhi after committing the crime and later fled in a taxi to Etah in UP.
The police then contacted all the private taxi operators of Delhi and zeroed in on a driver who had dropped him to Etah. When a police team reached Etah, the accused had fled from there as well.
"Again a massive manhunt was launched in the radius of 60 km by forming several teams. During this extensive exercise, Rajbir was apprehended," said Additional Commissioner of Police (Central) Alok Kumar.
