Makkar had not been keeping well for the past some months, his family said. He was cremated in Hansi today.
Various bazaars including main bazaar of the Hansi city remained closed as a mark of respect to the departed leader.
Makkar was elected MLA on three occasions from Hansi constituency of Haryana. He was first time elected in 1982 on Lok Dal party ticket. In 1991, he won the election as an independent candidate.
Later in 2005, Makkar was elected MLA as a Congress party candidate.
