Expressing serious concern over last Monday's disruption of court proceedings by a section of lawyers at an Alipore court, former Lok Sabha speaker Somnath Chatterjee today said that if the Judiciary cannot function, it would pose a great danger to the country.
"It is a despicable act. It indicates a grave danger. Judiciary is a big pillar. If it can't function, it poses a great danger before the country. If supreme court can't or any court can't work properly then it will turn into a jungle raj," Chatterjee said in Birbhum.
"There is no alternative to the judicial system in the civilised world and we must show proper respect to it. This incident is signalling a danger if not stopped immediately," he said.
"I appeal to the common man to be cautious about such incidents," he added.
Trinamool Congress MP Sultan Ahmed was also critical of the incident.
"The incident happened inside a courtroom. I will not get into whether those involved in the incident belong to any party or not but I will say that if the court proceedings were stopped, it will affect the common people.. I do not support this," Ahmed said.

A section of lawyers in an Alipore court on Monday had demanded a hearing before any order was passed on the incorporation of Section 409 of the IPC (criminal breach of trust by a public servant) against Transport Minister Madan Mitra in the Saradha case on a plea by the CBI.
They also told the court that as a senior lawyer died yesterday, they were not attending court as a mark of respect to the departed colleague and as such the judge should not pass any order in this matter.
Additional chief judicial magistrate Haradhan Mukhopadhyay remained firm and said that he would pass the order on the day itself and the court finally passed the order.
