Bibi Chand Kaur, the wife of former Namdhari sect chief Satguru Jagjeet Singh, who was shot dead by two unidentified motorcycle-borne assailants yesterday, was cremated at Bhaini Sahib, the international headquarters of the sect, about 30 km from here.
The pyre was lit by Uttam Singh, the son of present Namdhari chief Thakur Udey Singh.
The cremation was attended amongst others by Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal, Leader of the Opposition in Punjab Assembly Charnjit Singh Channi, Ludhiana Congress MP Ravneet Singh Bittu and state RSS leader Mool Raj Jain.
Kaur (85) had suffered two bullet injuries and was admitted to a Ludhiana hospital in critical condition, where she succumbed to the injuries.
The assailants had opened fire when she came out of the premises of Namdhari Academy at Bhaini Sahib after offering prayers at a function on the eve of the opening of the new education session.
Congress leaders including Channi, Bittu and former state chief of the party H S Hanspal blamed the Punjab government for "poor law and order situation" and demanded resignation of Deputy CM Sukhbir Singh Badal, who holds the Home portfolio, "on moral grounds".
