Mario Cuomo, a three-time New York governor who was once considered a leading candidate for the White House, has died. He was 82.
He died at home yesterday from heart failure after a long illness, just hours after his eldest son Andrew was inaugurated for a second term as New York governor.
"He couldn't be here physically today, my father. But my father is in this room. He's in the heart and mind of every person who is here," Andrew Cuomo said in his inaugural address.
US President Barack Obama praised Cuomo's commitment to a life of public service.
"He rose to be chief executive of the state he loved, a determined champion of progressive values, and an unflinching voice for tolerance, inclusiveness, fairness, dignity, and opportunity," the US president said in a statement late yesterday.
