A senior Pakistani police official's convoy was attacked here today by Taliban militants with hand grenades, just days after he called for a ban on the Muttahida Qaumi Movement.
Former SSP, Malir, Rao Anwar told a news channel that his convoy was attacked on the link road near Pakistan Steel town and he suspected the involvement of Tehreek-e-Taliban (TTP) militants in the attack.
"Some men in Corolla car and on motorcycles opened fire on our vehicle and also threw three hand grenades but only one exploded. There was a heavy exchange of fire between them and my police guards," he said.
Anwar escaped the attack unscathed as his car was bullet-proof.
Anwar was suspended on Thursday, hours after he had alleged in a press briefing that the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) was a terrorist organisation.
The press conference drew strong reaction from the MQM, which dismissed the charges as baseless.
Later on, the police carried out search operations in the area, during which five of the assailants were killed.
