Abhijit Bhattacharjee, captain of the national volleyball team and an official of Oil and Natural Gas Commission (ONGC), said he had set up the Rangani Youths Sports Foundation for the last three years for developing rural sports.
During a function held here today Bhattacharjee distributed volleyballs, nets, jerseys among rural youths to encourage them to enter into the sports arena in a big way.
"I do not understand why the able-bodied youths of the region are taking to the guns. They should be instead given the facilities to become successful sportspersons and bring laurels for the country", he said.
Santanu Baruah, coordinator of the foundation said in the last three years atleast 200 volleyball players in the rural areas have been promoted.
