Four police officials, including an assistant police inspector, were suspended today after a robbery accused allegedly committed suicide at a police station in Beed district of Maharashtra.
Superintendent of Police Naveenchandra Reddy suspended ASI Vishambhar Pallewad along with four other police personnel - Vishnu Nagargoje, Vikas Waghmare and R S Vanjare - of Parli police station in Beed district, DSP Kakasaheb Dole said.
Tukaram Sambhaji Jogdand, who had been picked up by police for questioning in connection with cases of motorcycle theft in the town, hanged himself inside the police station's lock-up on Saturday evening, police sources said.
Earlier it was reported that he hanged himself inside the premises of Parli city police station, but today it became clear that the accused had hanged himself inside the lock-up, the sources said.
On being asked the reason behind the accused's "suicide", a top police official said it would be known only after the investigations are completed.
The report of the post-mortem, which was conducted in-camera at the SRT Hospital of Ambajogai tehsil, has said that Jogdand died due to hanging.
A crime investigation team reached Parli city today and took measurements of the lock-up, sources said.
