The team, led by sub-inspector Satyavan Kadam, was on night patrol duty and had received a tip off of a gang executing theft of livestock in Mira Road locality, Mira Road police station inspector Jagdish S Shinde said.
As soon as the police team spotted that the gang, including 8-10 members who were trying to decamp with some cows in the locality by injecting tranquilisers, they intercepted them and foiled their attempt, Shinde said.
The gang had come in three vehicles, two tempos and an SUV, rammed their vehicles into the police jeep but no one was injured, he said, adding, some of the officers jumped out to chase the miscreants.
Those arrested were identified as Mohamamad Shakil, Mohammad Shaikh, Shahnawad Qureshi and Imam Shaikh.
A case has been registered under IPC section 307 (attempt to murder), 353 (criminal force to deter public servant from discharging duty), 428 (mischief by killing animal) in this regard, he added.
