Four men were killed when a fire gutted a suburban godown during early hours today and about ten tons of plastic scrap was reduced to ashes, a top Fire and Rescue Services official said today.
"Four young men, two from Odisha, one from Kanchipuram and another from Tiruchendur were charred to death. The bodies have been sent to a government hospital for autopsy," S Vijayasekar, Joint Director, Fire and Rescue Services told PTI.
The fire was noticed around 1.45 am at the godown-cum-scrap recycling unit located at Kaduvetti on the Avadi Ponnamalle Road and as many as 15 fire tenders were rushed to the spot.
"When we entered the room these four men were lying dead. It was a small 10 x 10 room. We don't know if these men noticed the fire or not or if they attempted to escape," the official said, adding, the cause of fire was under investigation.
The godown-cum-recycling unit was functioning in an open yard and the small room was the only built up structure.
"It was full of plastic refuse, corrugated boxes and other scrap materials and about 10 tons of it was consumed by fire. The fire was put out in about two hours."
The dead were identified as Amar (22), Raja (23) (hailing from Odisha) and Sarathkumar (23) of Kanchipuram and Raghu (26) of Tiruchendur.
