A special court for Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances cases today sentenced four persons, who were arrested in 2012 for carrying 267 kg of ganja, to ten years imprisonment.
Finding them guilty of the offence, First Additional Special Court Judge, J Justin David, also imposed a fine of Rs one lakh each on the convicts.
According to police, Madhan, Arumugam, Eshwar, Sakthivelraja and Selvam were arrested near Vandalur overbridge on May 2012 while they were carrying ganja. Another accused, Selvam had absconded.
Investigations showed that they were carrying the contraband from Annavaram near Vijayawada in Andhra Pradesh. Police registered a case and seized a Tata sumo vehicle. Since Selvam absconded, the case was split and trial was conducted only in respect of the remaining four persons.
The period already undergone by the convicts would be adjusted against the 10-year imprisonment, the judge said in his order.
