Keeping the 2008 violence in view, the state government deployed armed forces at Jaleshpeta and Chakapada, where the slain Sarasati had established ashrams.
"Security has been strengthened in all vulnerable places. Patrols, searches and frisking were made in many places including the entry points of the district," a senior police officer said.
Security was tightened at selected churches in the district, said G P Behera, a deputy superintendent of police, Kandhamal.
Kalasha yatra, Nama yagna, Anna yagna, Ghruta yagna and Geeta yagna are being held in ashrams.
Apart from Krushna Janma and Nandoutshab are also to be celebrated throughout the night, R K Padhi a social activist of Tumudibandh said.
Saraswati along with four associates were killed by unidentified gunmen while celebrating Janmastami at Jaleshpeta Ashram on August 23, 2008. The killing had triggered large-scale violence in Kandhamal and other places of Odisha.
