The Vatican on Sunday announced Fr Albert Hemrom as the coadjutor Bishop and the successor of Bishop Joseph Aind of the Catholic Diocese of Dibrugarh in Assam.
The Diocese comprises the civil districts of Tinsukia, Dibrugarh, Sivasagar, Charaideo, Majuli, Jorhat and Golaghat.
Pope Francis made the announcement at around 4.30 pm, following which incumbent Bishop Aind pronounced the name of Fr Albert Hemrom as the next Bishop before a huge congregation here.
The Bishop designate, 49-year-old Fr Hemrom, is a PhD in Canon Law, and will be the sixth Bishop of Dibrugarh and the youngest in the north-east region, Bishop Pores Aind told PTI.
Fr Hemrom will be consecrated as a Bishop on March 3 in presence of other bishops and a huge Catholic congregation, he said.
He will be the coadjutor Bishop till the retirement of Bishop Aind on November 6, 2020, Bishop House sources said.
At present, Fr Hemrom is the Rector of St Josephs Seminary, Dibrugarh and also holds the post of Judicial Vicar of the Catholic Diocese.
