Food and Consumer Affairs Minister Ram Vilas Paswan today asked Bureau of India Standards to review and frame new quality standards for milk products ahead of the festive season.
"We should ensure the quality of food products, therefore the existing standards need to be reviewed and at the same time, frame standards for all the milk products," Paswan said.
Chairing the board meeting of Bureau of India Standards (BIS) here, the minister also instructed officials to expedite the process for framing standards for the sectors identified by DIPP under the 'Make in India' campaign.
The minister also said that BIS should give preference in giving certification and framing standards for sectors, which are part of the 'Swachh Bharat' campaign.
He also said that BIS labs should be self-sufficient and should be equipped with all the necessary equipments.
"Labs in all the states should have required infrastructure to test all latest products," the minister said.

He also suggested that the bureau should initiate more campaigns to make the general public aware about these standards.
In June this year, the Cabinet had approved a new bill to replace the 29 year-old Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) Act with an aim to bring in more products under the mandatory standard regime and end the 'inspector raj'.
To ensure quality products to consumers, the new bill proposes to bring in more items under the mandatory system. Currently, 92 items are under mandatory standards.
