The actor, who was best known for his portrayal of Frasier Crane's father, Martin, on the NBC sitcom, died on February 4 in Chicago after a short illness, his representative confirmed to E! News.
Born on June 20, 1940 in Bispham, England, Mahoney started his career with theatre in 1977 and joined films three years later.
He played the blue-collar patriarch in "Frasier" for 11 seasons from 1993 to 2004.
Mahoney also worked as a voice actor and has performances on Broadway and in Chicago theatre to his credit.

"Frasier" casting director Jeff Greenberg and documentary filmmaker Micheal Moore mourned the veteran actor's death on social media.
"The great John Mahoney passed away today at age 77. I've not known a kinder man nor more brilliant actor. We were all blessed to have spent 11 glorious years together," Greenberg wrote alongside a picture of the show's cast with Mahoney.
Moore tweeted a clip from "Say Anything..." and captioned it as "John Mahoney with John Cusack and Ione Skye in Cameron Crowe's 'Say Anything...'"
"RIP, John Mahoney. Thank you for many years of laughter. We'll miss you Marty Crane, alongside the actor's picture from the show.
