Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Wednesday said freedom of the press is prerequisite for a robust democracy, and urged mediapersons to assist the state government in effective functioning.

The media is the fourth pillar of democracy and must keep a strict vigil on the other pillars so that democratic traditions of the country can function smoothly, he said.

"We welcome all criticism with an open mind so that the government can be careful, sensitive and responsive to the various problems and issues of the state," Sonowal said at a function organised to give accreditation and recognition cards to 160 journalists here.

"A free press is a prerequisite for a robust democracy and the government will accept the criticism and rectify its mistakes whenever pointed out by the press," the CM stated.

He also urged journalists to join hands with the government in spreading awareness against superstitious beliefs in the society and building a scientific temperament among the young generation.

Sonowal said the Assam government would consider providing annual financial assistance for activities related to the welfare of journalists.
