Freight earnings up by over 7 per cent
Press Trust of India New Delhi Railways have earned Rs 16,405.26 crores from freight traffic during April-May this year as compared to Rs 15,324.25 crore during the corresponding period last year, registering an increase of 7.05 per cent.
Railways carried 180.63 MT of goods during April-May 2014 as compared to 171.84 MT carried during the corresponding period last year, registering an increase of 5.12 per cent, according to Railway Ministry data.
In May, railways earned Rs 8334.09 crore from freight traffic out of which Rs 3601.27 crore came from transportation of 43.96 MT of coal, followed by Rs 720.10 crore from 10.42 MT of iron ore for exports, steel plants and for other domestic users.
The national transporter earned Rs 818.47 crore from transportation of 10.22 MT of cement, Rs 765.15 crore from 4.89 MT of foodgrains, Rs 499.27 crore from 3.80 MT of petroleum oil and lubricant (POL), Rs 513.88 crore from 3.30 MT of Pig iron and finished steel from steel plants and other points, Rs 355.83 crore from 3.37 MT of fertilisers, Rs 111.66 crore from 1.20 MT of raw material for steel plants except iron ore, Rs 378.88 crore from 4.19 MT by container service and Rs 569.58 crore from 6.48 MT of other goods.
