Fresh snowfall in the hills adds to chill in Uttarkhand

Overnight snowfall in the hills and isolated light showers accompanied by icy winds in the lower areas added to chill across Uttarakhand today with Mukteshwar in Nainital district recording sub-zero temperature.
Heavy snowfall hit Chamoli, Rudraprayag and Uttarkashi for hours last night bringing Kedarnath, Badrinath, Gangotri and Yamunotri shrines located in these districts under layers of snow.
Chopta and Rudranath peaks in Chamoli district besides Hemkund Sahib and Nandadevi Bio-sphere Reserve were covered under fresh snow even as icy winds swept the whole of the district making people shiver.
Skiing enthusiasts hit the snow laden slopes of Auli, a famous winter sports destination in Chamoli district as news about fresh snowfall in the area spread, District Disaster Management officer N K Joshi said.
Light snowfall at Nagtibba, Buranshkhanda Surkandadevi and Dhanolti near Mussoorie has generated much excitement among tourists who were seen frolicking about in snow and getting themselves photographed.
Though it was bright and clear at most places today cold winds blowing from the hills kept the temperatures down, the MeT department here said.
Mukteshwar in Nainital district was the coldest in the state recording a minimum of minus 1.0 degree celsius followed by Tehri which recorded a minimum of 0.2 degree C and Pithoragarh at 1.7 degree C, it said.
Dehradun which awoke to a bright sunny morning recorded a miminum of 6.4 degree celsius followed by Pantnagar at 6.6 degree C.
