The free trade agreement with Japan has helped Indian leather industry to enhance its exports to that country, CLE today said.
"The comprehensive economic partnership agreement between India and Japan has enabled reduced import duties in Japan for leather products and footwear exported from India, on account of which India has been able to considerably enhance its export to Japan," Council for Leather Exports (CLE) said.
It said there is tremendous scope available in Japan to further increase market share.
A delegation of 35 domestic leather companies are participating in a three-day fair - Fashion World Tokyo - in Japan, which started today.
The council said Japan is the seventh largest importer of leather and leather products in the world.
India's export of leather products to Japan has increased from USD 38.70 million in 2012-13 to USD 63.97 million in 2016-17.
CLE Chairman Mukhtarul Amin said participating in the show provides a platform for companies to showcase their products and explore Japanese market.
