Students of prestigious FTII-Pune today brought their protest to the capital demanding immediate removal of TV actor Gajendra Chauhan as chairman of its governing council, and alleged that the NDA government was "saffronising" premier educational institutions.
Carrying placards and shouting slogans, the students staged their protest outside Shastri Bhavan which houses the Information and Broadcasting Ministry that made the appointment, before they were detained by police. The students, numbered over hundred, were released later.
The Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) students have been boycotting classes as part of their agitation against appointment of Chauhan, a BJP member who is best known for his portrayal of Yudhisthira in the mega TV serial "Mahabharat".
A group of students from Jawaharlal Nehru University and Delhi University held a protest after the students from FTII were detained.
"We are here to show solidarity to our friends in FTII. We too demand removal of Chouhan," said Arvind KR, a student of JNU.
The FTII students' association had sent a communication to Information and Broadcasting Minister Arun Jaitley on June 15 on their demands through FTII Director D Narain after failing to get a positive response from the ministry.
The FTII students' association has alleged that Chauhan does not have "vision and stature" of his eminent predecessors to merit his posting by the government.
