With almost all the petrol pumps in Mizoram without petrol and diesel, fuel scarcity has hit the state hard during the past one week due to mega block, suspension of railway services in a key route.
Though the state Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Department officials said a number of oil tankers were heading for Mizoram from Guwahati, many vehicles were off the road in the state due to shortage of fuel.
The officials said that four tank lorries carrying 45 kl of petrol and 10 tank lorries carrying 120 kl of diesel were expected to arrive in Aizawl today
Similarly, 12 tank lorries carrying 144 kl of petrol and 15 tank lorries carrying 180 kl of diesel left Guwahati and expected to reach Aizawl by tomorrow, the officials said.
The fuel crisis was attributed to the mega block, suspension of services by Northeast Frontier Railway between Lumding and Badarpur in Assam from October 1 for gauge conversion work.
The mega block hit Mizoram, Tripura, Manipur and southern parts of Assam as all the essential commodities have to be transported by road alone.
The officials also said that Durga puja and frequent road blocks in Meghalaya also caused the scarcity.
