Chinnasamy (80) this morning noticed that the 10-foot tall 15-year old tree had been axed from the trunk and smuggled out, police said.
The miscreants, suspected to be habitual sandalwood thieves, had entered the premises by scaling the compound wall, they said
Some persons had tried to cut the tree a month ago, but fled after a security guard nearby raised an alarm, police said.
Two sandal wood trees, aged around 10 and 12 years, located in front of a house in the same locality had been cut and smuggled out just a month ago.
