Uttarakhand Governor K K Paul today asked private universities based in the state to fund the higher education of girls belonging to underprivileged families of remote hill areas under their Corporate Social Responsibility.
Issuing directives to this effect at a meeting with Additional Chief Secretary (higher education) S Ramaswamy, Paul said private universities in Uttarakhand should meet the expenses of higher education of girls from underprivileged families out of their CSR funds and also provide them hostel facilities.
Hostel facilities should be made available on a priority basis at places like the Horticulture and Forestry University, Bharsar (Pauri) as students would take admission there only when residential facility is available in the remote area, he said.
The governor also suggested that special financial arrangement should be ensured for research in universities.
Paul's meeting with the additional chief secretary was held ahead of his next tri-monthly meeting with the VCs of state-based universities in August to discuss ways tobring about qualitative improvement in higher education and create a healthy academic atmosphere in the state.
He has beendiscussing how to strengthen basic infrastructure in state universities, upgrade the existing systems and methods to remove hurdles in developing them on the lines of national and international universities.
The Governor also reviewed the action taken by the VCs at administrative level.
