With the arrest of two women and recovery of fake Indian currency with a face value of Rs 11 lakh, the Delhi Police today claimed to have busted a gang which smuggled fake notes via flights from Bangkok by concealing them in cosmetic and crockery containers.
The accused have been identified as Rekha (40) and Sheetal Singh (36). The duo was arrested on Thursday from the New Delhi Railway Station as soon as they alighted from Duronto Express coming from Kolkata
"Rekha, a widow, is the mastermind of the gang. She has been into this illegal trade for past couple of years while Sheetal had just joined her recently for earning easy money. The duo has revealed that they were acting as courier agents on the behest of some Pakistan nationals based in Bangkok," said Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Ravindra Yadav.
Police had recently received secret information that off late, Fake Indian Currency Notes (FICN) were being smuggled to India from a new route via Bangkok apart from the well established routes of Nepal and Bangladesh.
The information was further developed and it was found that some persons of "Pakistani origin" were providing FICN to the potential customers at Bangkok. Some of the Delhi based suspects were identified who were frequently traveling to Bangkok via Kolkata.
A tip off was received that two women involved in such module have reached Kolkata from Thailand with a big consignment of FICN via Duronto Express, following which a trap was laid and the woman traffickers were apprehended.
"During a thorough search, it was discovered that they had concealed the FICN very carefully in talcum powder containers. The concealment was done so skillfully that it had skipped the vigilance at the Airport," said Yadav.
