Abhay Singh, had won the recent assembly election from Gosaiganj assembly constituency, is in jail since October, 2010 after a case of extortion was lodged against him by a local businessman Vikas Singh and police had later slapped him with the Gangster Act.
But the Samajwadi Party government has started the process for the withdrawal of a criminal case against Abhay, currently lodged in Faizabad district jail, officials said.
According to R K Shrivastava, the prosecuting officer, the state government had asked for the report regarding the withdrawal of a case registered under section 386 of the IPC for extortion, attempt to murder and Gangster act pending against Abhay Singh in Maharajganj police station.
Srivastava said that Abhay Singh is on bail from the different courts in two other cases of Gangster Act registered at Raunahi police station and City Kotwali police stations of the district.
