A gangster wanted in 24 criminal cases was arrested near Rajnagar flyover here following an encounter, police said Tuesday.
Superintendent of Police (City) Shlok Kumar said Ajay alias Pintori was apprehended during search of vehicles last night.
"Police signalled a motorcycle to stop, but the bikers fired at them. Police fired in retaliation in which Ajay sustained a bullet injury," he said.
Sub-Inspector Jitendra Yadav also sustained an injury, Kumar added.
The two other criminals travelling with Ajay managed to flee the spot.
Ajay, hailing from Dam Dama Lake of Sohna district in Gurgoan, was hiding in Arthla village of the Sahibabad area here, the SP said.
Around two dozen cases of different sections of the IPC and the Gangster Act are registered against him in various police stations of Ghaziabad, Bulandshahr and Delhi, he said.
Police have recovered a country-made pistol of 315 bore and three live cartridges from him and four empty shells from the encounter site, Kumar said.
