Gardener arrested in Vasant Kunj gang rape and murder case

A gardener of the nursery where a 30-year-old woman was found dead in a semi-naked condition on Saturday in Vasant Kunj area of south Delhi has been arrested in connection with her gang rape and murder.
According to police, the gardener lives in Sultanpur area in the vicinity of the woman's house and was a friend of her.
"The accused has been identified as Ramtej (30), a resident of Sultanpur in Uttar Pradesh. He worked at Kusum nursery in Vasant Kunj and lived on its premises. Personal belongings of the victim including a mobile phone have been recovered," said Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) Prem Nath.

Ramtej worked on part-time basis at the nursery and also at the export house where the woman worked as a tailor. On the night of the incident, after her shift at the export unit, Ramtej took the woman to the nursery in an auto-rickshaw with his aides. After walking a little distance, one of the men gagged her mouth and they took her into the nursery.
"Her proximity with some other men had irked him following which he along with some of his associates decided to teach her a lesson. They had sexually assaulted her and a wooden stick was also inserted in her private parts before killing her. The body was dumped in the nursery. Ramtej has been arrested and efforts are on to nab his associates," said a police officer.

The victim who was missing since Friday evening was sexually assaulted by the assailants. The body was found in a Delhi Development Authority (DDA) nursery in south Delhi's Vasant Kunj area here.
The incident came to light on Saturday around 8:20 AM here when a security guard informed the police about the body which he had spotted lying in bushes.
The semi-naked body of the woman with hands and legs tied was found in the bushes of the nursery. Yesterday, scores of students from Jawaharlal Nehru University had staged a protest outside Vasant Kunj police station in south Delhi over alleged police inaction in the case.
