The ruling Trinamool Congress today got a shot in the arm as Greater Cooch Behar People's Association (GCPA) today extended its support to the party for the upcoming by-election in the Cooch Behar Lok Sabha seat.
TMC, however, had made it clear that it will never support the demand for a separate state that GCPA had been fighting for the last few decades.
Greater Cooch Behar People's Association (GCPA) leader Bangshi Badan Barman met Trinamool vice-president Mukul Roy at TMC Bhawan and extended their support for the Cooch Behar Lok Sabha seat.
"The GCPA has decided to support TMC in the upcoming by-election in Cooch Behar Lok Sabha seat. They are very much impressed by the development work done by the state government. They have never demanded for a separate state and we will neither accept it," Roy said.
A few months back, Trinamool had alleged that the BSF was "training" 'Narayani Sena', a private army of the erstwhile Maharaja of Cooch Behar. The allegation was denied by BSF.
Asked about the issue of Narayani Sena, Roy said, "Those who were imparted training don't belong to GCPA. We have protested against it as it is unconstitutional. They have no relation with GCPA."
The Lok Sabha seats of Tamluk in Purba Medinipur and Cooch Behar in Cooch Behar district along with Monteswar Assembly seat in Bardhaman will go to polls on November 19.
