Gehlot seeks expedition in implementation of scavenging Act

Union Social Justice and Empowerment Minister Thaawar Chand Gehlot has sought expedition in the implementation of Prohibition of Employment as Manual Scavengers and their Rehabilitation Act, 2013.
The Minister said this while chairing the third meeting of the Central Monitoring Committee to review the implementation of the Act yesterday, a statement here said today.
The central Act was enacted by Parliament in September, 2013.
Gehlot sought expedition in the implementation of the Act and payment of Rs 10 lakh compensation in the cases of sewer deaths, which have occurred since 1993, as per the guidelines of the Supreme Court.
All states and Union Territories are advised to implement the provisions of the Act in time-bound manner, the statement added.
The statement also said that 12,753 manual scavengers have, so far, been identified in 30 states, mostly in urban areas. Identification of manual scavengers in rural areas is under progress.
