Actor George Takei is disappointed to know that his legendary character Sulu will be gay in "Star Trek Beyond".
Hikaru Sulu, who is played by John Cho in Justin Lin's follow-up to Star Trek into Darkness, will be shown to be the father of a young girl with a same-sex partner in the movie, said The Hollywood Reporter.
"I'm delighted that there's a gay character. Unfortunately, it's a twisting of Gene's creation, to which he put in so much thought. I think it's really unfortunate," Takei said.
The actor is not happy with the change because "Star Trek" creator Gene Roddenberry envisioned Sulu as straight - with a daughter named Demora.
"I told (John Cho), 'Be imaginative and create a character who has a history of being gay, rather than Sulu, who had been straight all this time, suddenly being revealed as being closeted," he added.
