German newspaper Die Welt says it will publish a trove of letters believed to be written by Nazi SS leader Heinrich Himmler, previously unseen by the public.
The publication said today it's working with Israeli director Vanessa Lapa, whose family had the documents in its possession. Welt plans an eight-part series starting Sunday, while Lapa will debut a documentary on the hundreds of private letters, notes and photos at next month's Berlin International Film Festival.
Welt says the love letters Himmler wrote to his wife and other materials don't change the overall picture of the Nazi era, but help provide a better idea of who the SS leader was. Welt says the documents' authenticity has been independently verified, but didn't say how they ended up with the Lapa family.
