"The ghariyal was brought here from the Lucknow zoo about three months ago and remained ill as it was suffering from internal injuries. It was about 38-years-old when brought here," Director Kanpur Zoo K Thomas said.
"The zoo doctors performed the post-mortem this morning and attributed the death to internal injuries. They ruled out attack by any animal as such," he said.
The Kanpur Zoo is currently in the news after 31 endangered blackbucks were recently found killed by stray dogs, following which the state government ordered a probe and suspended eight officials including the then Zoo Director K Praveen Rao.
A detailed report on the ghariyal's death has been sent to the UP government, Thomas said.
