Drones mounted with cameras have been deployed by the district police here for better vigil and smooth conduct of the Kanwar yatra, which will conclude on August 29.
Taking cue from past experiences when petty skirmishes between 'Kawariyas' and locals took ugly turns, camera drones have been deployed to avert such incidents, said City Superintendent of Police Ajay Pal Sharma today.
On Thursday SHO Sahibabad Haridayal Yadav took a trial of camera drones and screened roof tops of Pasonada, Arthala, Shaheed Nagar and other residential colonies adjacent to Delhi Uttar Pradesh border, he said.
Control rooms to monitor the drones have been setup at Murad Nagar, Modi Nagar and Sahibabad police stations, the SP said.
Sharma further added that CCTV cameras have also been mounted at various points to monitor the pilgrims' movement at GT Road, Link Road, Delhi-Meerut Road on daily basis.
Eighteen manned watch towers have also been erected at strategic points in the district with three police personnel keeping round the clock watch atop each of the towers, he added.
'Kanwar Yatra' is the annual pilgrimage during the holy month of Shrawan to Hindu pilgrimage places of Haridwar, Gaumukh and Gangotri in Uttarakhand and Sultanganj in Bihar to take a dip and collect water of river Ganga to offer to Lord Shiva.
