Girl blindness case: NHRC summons police officer

The NHRC has summoned Yavatmal Superintendent of Police in connection with a 2012 case, in which a new born girl had lost sight in both her eyes due to the alleged negligence of a doctor.
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has served summons on the SP Akhilesh Kumar Singh to appear before it on July 7.
In 2012, Sujit Rai, who is from Waghapur village on the outskirts of the city, had admitted his wife Roshni to a local private hospital, where she delivered a premature baby girl, who was later named as Bhumika. She was then sent to a private criticare hospital.

Rai alleged that despite reporting the matter to the doctor he ignored it and treated the child with some drugs.
However, after a few days, they noticed the girl's eyes turning red and reported the matter to the doctor and within a month, her eyes turned white and an ophthalmologist said the child had lost sight in one eye and infection had spread to the other and it could not be rectified.
Rai then approached the district consumer grievances forum, which ordered the doctor and the insurance company to pay compensation.
The girl's father had also approached the court and later also filed a suit with NHRC for its intervention.
