A "perfectly healthy" girl died hours after her birth at a city government-run hospital here, with the police investigating the case, hospital authorities today said.
"The baby was born at 2.05 pm on August 14 and she died around 4 am on August 15. She was perfectly healthy, had a normal birth and weighed 3 kgs. She was put in the post-natal ward, along with her mother," Medical Superintendent of Rao Tula Ram Memorial Hospital, Sangeeta Basu, told PTI.
"If a child has any problem, we keep him or her in a nursery. The child was perfectly healthy and hence kept in the normal ward," she added.
The 100-bed hospital is located in south-west Delhi's Jafarpur area.
"When the alarm was raised about the baby, doctors tried to resuscitate her, but in vain. We don't know the cause of the death yet. An MLC (medico-legal case) has been registered. The police is investigating the matter. The post-mortem has been conducted and the viscera has been sent to the forensic lab," she said, adding, the doctors have said that there "could be a foul play".
Basu said this was Kanchan's (mother) second child. "She is 27 and has one daughter".
"The child suckled at around 1 am on August 15 and, that is a very healthy sign. We are awaiting the forensic report to know as to what really happened," she said.
Basu said the hospital has enough oxygen supply and rejected reports that there was any problem related to that.
