Girl immolation: 2 ASIs suspended, 5th accused arrested

Two policemen were suspended in connection with death of a 17-year-old girl who was allegedly set ablaze by six youths including three she had accused of rape even as another accused, the fifth one, was arrested this evening.
Assistant Sub-Inspectors (ASIs) Balbir Singh, in-charge of Kanganwal police chowki, and Mohan Lal, in-charge of Focal Point police chowki, were placed under suspension yesterday for alleged negligence, police said.
In her complaint, the victim's mother had alleged both the ASIs had refused to register an FIR when she reported the matter to police after her daughter was allegedly set ablaze by six youths.
Amarjit, one of the six accused in the case, was arrested this evening, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Nilambri Jagdale said.
One accused was still at large, he said.
Four accused arrested earlier were identified as Shehzad, Anwar, Chottu Mohammad and Binder, police said.
Six youths, including three rape accused, had allegedly set the girl afire after sprinkling kerosene on her at her house in Prem Nagar colony in Dhandari Khurd on December 4.
The alleged rape victim succumbed to burn injuries at a government hospital in Chandigarh yesterday. The funeral took place last night amid tight security.
