A 17-year-old girl, who was hit by a bullet during celebratory firing by a marriage procession passing by her house in outer Delhi's Mongolpuri area, succumbed to her injuries today.
"The accused in the case, two of them identified so far, are absconding and a team has been formed to track them down. Section 302 (murder) of IPC has been added in the FIR," DCP (Outer) Vikramjit Singh said.
According to police, the incident took place on Saturday when the girl, Anjali, was on the balcony of her second floor residence in Mongolpuri area and a marriage procession was passing by.
The music was too loud and suddenly Anjali's relatives saw her collapse in a pool of blood, without realising what had happened. It was at the hospital that doctors informed them that she was hit by a bullet on her face.
Anjali had appeared in Class 12 board exams this year. Her sisters were present with her in the balcony at the time of the incident. They raised an alarm when they saw Anjali collapse. Neighbours informed her father who has his own shop nearby.
The police were informed and preliminary investigation showed that the bullet which hit Anjali was fired by the wedding revellers. The police registered a case of attempt to murder in connection with the incident.
Two men, who were allegedly involved in celebratory firing at the wedding procession, were identified but they fled by the time a police team could nab them. One of the identified accused turned out to be a cousin of the groom, a police official said.
