Girl undergoes rare surgery for correcting faster heartbeat

A six-year old child girl underwent a rare heart surgery using radio frequency energy to correct faster heartbeat at a city hospital.
The girl from Thanjavur with a history of multiple episodes of palpitations (faster heart rate) underwent the surgery at the Kovai Medical Center and Hospital (KMCH) after she sufferred cardiac arrest and revived at a local hospital.
The patient was discharged two days after the procedure and can resume her normal life with no need for drugs or further treatment, Dr Lawrance Jesuraj, a specialist in treating heart rhythm related diseases who performed the surgery, said in a release today.
Although patients having faster heart rate due to extra electrical system was not rare, treating small children for he condition was a challenge as their heart was small for putting catheters and delivering heat through radio frequency energy, he said.
KMCH is stated to be one of the few centres in the state having facility to treat heart rhythm disorders.
