Give 33 pc reservation to women in police to fight crime

Union Women and Child Development Minister Maneka Gandhi today appealed to Chattisgarh Chief Minister Raman Singh to give 33 per cent reservation to women in the police force in addressing the problem of crimes against women in the state.
Maneka, who was in Raipur to inaugurate the first 'One Stop Centre' for women in distress in Chattisgarh capital, also praised the state for maintaining the child sex ratio above the national average.
She appealed to the Chief Minister to give 33 per cent reservation to women in the police force to help address the problem of crimes against women, an official statement said.

The first 'One Stop Centre' (OSC), of the Women and Child Development Ministry, for women in distress has been set up on the premises of Raipur's district hospital which would provide all type of assistance including medical, police, legal help, psychosocial counselling, temporary support services to the victims of violence.
"Having the first One Stop Centre, however, also entails responsibility and this One Stop Centre will be keenly watched now," Maneka said after inaugurating the facility.
Gandhi said that OSCs will be set up in each state and Union Territory during the current year and if they work well, they will be opened in each district.

These will be integrated with women helpline-181 and other existing helpline numbers to make them fully effective, she explained.
The Ministry has proposed to set up 36 such centres across the country in the current year with an outlay of Rs 14 crore.
In the first phase there will be one Center per State and UT. Gandhi also highlighted the 'Beti Bachao Beti Padhao' scheme of the Ministry launched in January this year to reverse the declining child sex ratio in the currently.
