GLS was established in the year 1927 by Sardar Patel, G V Mavlankar, the first Lok Sabha Speaker and a city-based philanthropist I M Nanavati.
"It is a dream of the management of Gujarat Law Society and myself which turned into reality today and actually it was on February 26, 2015, when the Gujarat Assembly accepted the bill of making it a private university by amending and adding GLS University as the sixteenth private university in the state," GLS University President Sudhir Nanavati told reporters.
Students would be admitted to the first year at GLS University from June 15, 2015, he said.
"After getting university status, we have decided to begin a five-year Masters in Science (MSC) in Information Technology," Nanavati said.

GLS University would also run a five-year Masters in Business Administration (MBA) course as well as a Bachelors in Law (LLB) courses, he said.
It has collaborated with around 15 foreign varsities to provide quality education to its student, he said.
In February this year, the Gujarat state government amended The Gujarat Private Universities (Amendment) Bill, 2015, which gave GLS the status of a private university.
