Acting on a tip-off, state police, Swift Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) and CRPFs CoBRA commandos raided the hideouts of the outlawed Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) in the village, at about 4 AM, Inspector General of Police G H P Raju said.
On reaching the village, the security forces came under heavy shelling from the militants and when they retaliated, one militant was killed and another was caught in the exchange of fire. The arrested militant was identified as Bisno Sangma, Raju said.
One AK-series rifle with six magazines and several rounds of ammunition and a pistol were seized from the slain militant and also from the encounter site, he said.
Additional forces have been rushed to the area for a village-to-village search of the injured militants, he said.
Earlier this month, a group of GNLA cadres blew off the head of a 35-year-old woman at Raja Ronggat village in neighbouring South Garo Hills district after she had resisted their alleged molestation and rape attempt.
Last week, the outfit's deputy chairman, 36-year-old Rapiush Ch Sangma was arrested from Bengalore.
