GNLA militant killed in encounter with police

A Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) militant was killed in an encounter with the police at a remote village in South Garo Hills district today, police said.
Acting on information received about the presence of armed GNLA cadres at Gareringdi village in South Garo Hills, a specialised police commando team from East Garo Hills district was deputed to the camp in the outskirts of the village, they said.
On reaching near the camp, the police team was fired at indiscriminately and the police returned the fire in which one of the cadres was killed, East Garo Hills, SP Vivekanand Singh said.
The dead militant is yet to be identified even as his pistol along with live cartridges was seized from his possession, the SP said.
From the camp site, GNLA demand notes, seals, diaries, receipt books, gelatine sticks and six mobile phones were recovered, he said.
According to the police team, two other cadres present at the camp are suspected to have received injuries in the encounter as they found blood trails.

A man-hunt was also launched in the village to try and nab those who made good escape of the encounter.
Meanwhile, two GNLA cadres have surrendered before the police in the past 24 hours in neighbouring South Garo Hills district.
Hembrol D Sangma alias Saleng alias Greenhorn of Papdigre village in South Garo Hills surrendered before the district SP A T Sangma yesterday.
The 2014 recruit was involved in the encounter the GNLA leader Sohan D Shira had with the security forces, a senior police officer told PTI.
The other was identified as Morning Sangma of Jandoki Bazaar area of Nangalbibra in Williamnagar where he surrendered to the East Garo Hills district SP.
