"What I was told is that he was chased by people and police. He got afraid and started running. He fell in a paddy field and died after inhaling sludge (muck)," the Chief Minister said.
"I have sought a report from the police over the matter," Parsekar added.
As soon as the Assembly session started this morning, Leader of Opposition Pratapsingh Rane raised the issue and alleged that the US national, identified as Caitan Vholte (30), was killed after being chased by a mob of local villagers.
"I don't understand where the tourism in the state is heading!" he said.
The incident had taken place at Korgao village in Pernem taluka of north Goa last night.
