Ahead of the Ganesh festival, Goa government has imposed a ban on Ganesh idols made of Plaster of Paris as they pollute water bodies upon immersion.
Checking at borders would be stepped up to ensure that rogue transporters do not bring in PoP Ganesh idols, state Environment Minister Alina Saldanha told reporters here today.
Ganesh Chaturthi, which is scheduled for September 9, is a popular religious festival in Goa.
Saldanha said the government will launch an awareness campaign against PoP idols ahead of the festival.
Last year also, the state government had put a ban on PoP idols.
