Several colleges under Goa University, in a pioneering step to promote gender equality, have created teams of "Gender Champions" comprising a pair of students and a faculty member.
The aim was to share with the rest of the students what gender really was and how equality could be achieved within gender binaries," Goa University Vice-Chancellor Varun Sahni said today.
The gender champions were awarded by Sahni during the third edition of 'Difficult Dialogues' which discussed "Gender equality for everyone's benefit?"
Commenting on these champions, Surina Narula, founder of Difficult Dialogues, said, "It is great to have gender champions in every college. The amazing thing that I have learnt here at Goa University is how they are promoting gender equality among the youth."
She informed that the 'gender champion' idea was a new one and the University College of London (UCL) was adopting this idea from Goa University.
"The One Billion Rising movement wanted Difficult Dialogues to get involved with the cause and so we have invited gender champions to our conference this year," Narula added.
