The Goa government on Tuesday introduced a bill to amend the Goa Marine Fishing Regulation Act to ban the use of explosives to catch fish in the state's inland waters.

The Goa Marine Fishing Regulation (Amendment) Bill 2019 was introduced in the Assembly by minister Mauvin Godinho as state Fisheries minister Filipe Neri Rodrigues was not present.

The bill seeks to regulate inland fishing after the Central act dealing with this was repealed.

A new insertion will prohibit the use of dynamite or other explosive substances "with intend to catch or destroy fish in any waters".

It seeks to prohibit the use of lime or any such noxious material for fishing.

The bill also makes it mandatory to seek government permission for erection of fishing stake, and registering of fishing nets with the Directorate of Fisheries.
