State Tourism Director Amey Abhyankar today passed an order invoking the Goa Essential Services Maintenance Act against the strike.
All India Trade Union Congress's Goa unit has issued notice of a two-day strike for certain demands which include permanent jobs and salary hike for life guards who serve on the beaches and waterways in the state.
The invocation of ESMA by the government makes the strike illegal and prohibits any strike on the beaches and inland waterways where lifeguard services are provided by the tourism department.
Under ESMA, a person taking part in strike can be sentenced to six months' prison term or fine of up to Rs 200.
A person who instigates or facilitates illegal strike can get one year's jail term. Even those extending financial aid for strike can get one year's imprisonment.
